Upgrading HVAC Systems

Improving Ventilation & Heating at Pioneer Recreation Centre

In late 2024 and early 2025 Citycare Property delivered a $1.1 million HVAC upgrade at the Pioneer Recreation Centre.
The project had three main objectives:

  • To replace the heat source (the town water supply) with new abstraction and reinjection wells and associated infrastructure.
  • Decarbonisation of part of the HVAC system by replacing the entire stadium ventilation, including its diesel-fired air handling unit, with a new system connected to the central heating/chilled water system, served by the central water source heat pumps.
  • Improve ventilation to refurbished toilet facilities.

The key challenges included working within very tight deadlines whilst maintaining full operation of the pool and sports centre.

Key to achieving this was good communication and scheduling the work appropriately to minimise any disruption, including over the Christmas break. Coordination of the works with all parties, including backup contingency plans, was imperative, with special consideration given to planning for adverse weather and critical lifting works.
